Plastic Storage Containers In The Classroom

As a volunteer at my local grade school, I thoroughly enjoy spending time with children. I love watching their little minds grow and soak up new experiences and knowledge. What a difference the year makes when I reflect back on their first days in the room the prior August. I'm very proud to be part of shaping their lives and think more adults should give more of themselves to help make future generations strong and capable.

Sadly, many classrooms don't have the resources they need to optimize the daily teaching experience for each child. In some of the upper grades where they study from text books, I see kids sharing, alternating nights each takes the resource home. I've even been in cities like Tampa where schools had three sessions each day just to accommodate the overcrowding. So tragic.

One of the ways I try to drive change is through our state representatives. I write to them each session and share my views. I hope it enlightens them and affects their acts and choices when in session.

Within the classroom, of course I have to take a much more tactical approach. Where possible, I bring in personal resources (some new, some used) for the class. For example, our teacher was doing a project which required paper tubes. I saved up paper towel tubes and toilet paper tubes for two months so that each child would have what they needed for the project. I wish more parents took personal responsibility to contribute to their own child's growth within the classroom.

I've also contributed plastic storage containers for use by the lead teacher and kids. After cleaning out my own kitchen recently, I realized I had more plastic storage containers than I could possibly use. I considered the multitude of puzzles, lacing cards, building blocks and craft supplies the classroom had and immediately knew what to do with those plastic storage containers.

We can each make our student's classroom a better place to be and learn.

Storage Ideas for Kids Rooms

Is your child's room cluttered and it seems like you never have enough storage space to put away all his things? One of the most common difficulties in most homes, is having enough space to store things, and especially in the bedroom areas. Children in particular need places to organize and store things like toys, shoes, sports equipment, hobby items, clothes, school supplies, books and much more. Traditional furniture like chests and dressers are great for storing many items, however, they usually never really provide enough places to put everything away. So what's a person to do?

Redo the closet area - Whether there is small or large closet area, you can still get more organizational space out of it than you think. One popular bed style today is a bed made with storage for kids that offers drawers underneath the bed frame. These serve the same purpose as a chest or dresser and depending on what size you choose, can offer as much or more space to store things. Choosing this type of bed can free up a lot of square footage in the room, plus it is a practical product for storage.
Replace your conventional shelves - If your youngster needs more space for storing books, sports equipment, hobby items, shoes or other things, it's hard to fit all this on a typical book shelf. Contemporary cubby hole shelves built for maximum storage can provide enough places to store just about everything. You can select pre-built cubby hole shelving that is simple, box-like construction and that can be added to, if need be. Large baskets or containers made from wire, cotton, wicker, plastic or woven basket material are often used to slide into the cubby holes. These can hold a huge amount of items. You can also leave some cubby holes open, to be used without containers. These can be used to put books, shoes, ball, gloves and other items that don't fit well into baskets.

These are just some of the basic storage ideas for kids rooms that can make life easier and help keep a tidy bedroom. In order to be organized, all you have to do is be a bit creative and use smart ideas for creating a clutter-free room for any youngster.

Toy stores: kids love them, and parents... well, let's just say parents tolerate them, and leave it at that.

Helping Your Children Organize Their Bedrooms

How many times have you heard "mom I don't know where to put this?" My kids also love the phrase "my closet is too full". I'd like to share some tips on helping your child organize their room.

Closets - Whenever you buy new clothes, get rid of some old clothes. Children grow and clothing through usage wears out. Even though my kids say "but I wear everything", when we really go through their closets, we always find clothes that either don't fit or are worn out. If they group like items, they're much more likely to be able to find what they're looking for. Group all their shirts together, all their pants together etc. We use plastic storage bins for the shelf in their closets. These bins are clearly labeled so that we can see exactly what's inside. I don't mind stacked bins as long as the bins are labeled and kept organized. The floors of their closets are used mostly for shoes and backpacks. I don't mind buying new shoes, but the same rules apply to shoes that apply to clothes, we need to throw out what doesn't fit and what has worn out.

Bookcases - We have lots of bookcases in our house. I probably have more than the kids. I really like bookcases. However, bookcases are a haven for clutter and items we just don't know what to do with. Usually once a month or so, we all choose a few shelves and we go through them, getting rid of those items we no longer need and putting away the items we believe we do still need. Old books need to be given away, sold online or traded in at the used bookstore. Once you've read the book, unless you truly believe you'll read it again, it needs to go. There are exceptions like the Harry Potter series. We have every book in the series and I'm certain those will be passed down to the next generation. This is the exception to the rule and we don't have a lot of exceptions. Some schoolwork can be saved but most of it can be recycled. There are not a lot of papers that are needed for the next year. If you have long essays, yes, save them. They took a lot of work and we're all proud of the work done. However, pieces of paper from homework, old tests etc. are only necessary if they'll be used to study for a future exam. At the end of the school year those items need to be tossed, less the essays we already spoke about. If you keep the bookcases clear of the clutter, you can almost always find what you're looking for and even display your knickknacks in a way that you'll be able to enjoy them.

Night stands - Both of my kids have night stands. They have a clock and other assorted stuff on the top. It's the drawers I want to see kept organized. I personally keep a pair of glasses, tissues and a few other things in my drawer. Both of my girls wear glasses. I believe that drawer is the perfect place to keep their glasses. Though they wear contacts, they need their glasses when they wake up in the morning. That drawer is also a great place to keep your current reading book and your journal. These are items you might want when you are in bed.

Under the Bed - Have you looked under your child's bed recently? I am always amazed at what my younger daughter tries to store under there. I've found old books, old clothes, one shoe and even old food. Of course I've told her many times that none of this is ok. Today, they make many storage bins that slide in right under your bed. These are great for storing off season clothing or other items you absolutely want to keep but don't use year round. I'm actually ok with big bulky current year text books hanging out under the bed, as long as it's a temporary storage situation.

If you can keep these 4 areas organized, you're well on your way to having a room where most everything can be found and enjoyed.

Plastic Storage Containers Make Art Project Day Fun

My kids love getting together a few Saturdays a year to spend the afternoon making arts and crafts. This is tons of fun for the kids, who get to use their imagination and creativity along with colorful, interesting bits of supplies to build projects with their own hands. Unfortunately, it can be messy and chaotic, too. And as the parent involved with the project, it certainly comes with its fair share of hassles. When the kids don't want to share the resources it can get very ugly.

One of my methods for getting around the sharing problem is to provide each of them with a full crafts kit of their own.

Each gets their own set of plastic storage containers, decorated by their own hand. I help them accept ownership for the status of the supplies (is the glue dried out? Is there no more tape?) because they each have their own plastic storage containers; therefore, if the glue is dry or there are no more googly eyes in their packet, there's no one else to blame.

We try to keep several staples on hand and then experiment with a handful of other interesting supplies. Glue sticks, glitter tubes, acrylic paints and brushes, pipe cleaners, construction paper, scissors and markers are part of everyone's kit. Then they customize their remaining plastic storage containers with items which interest them like foam cut-outs, princess stickers, beads, etc.

With all that glue and glitter, I was concerned about our kitchen floor. Then I picked up a large drop cloth to protect the finish and give them some wiggle room for mistakes.

I keep a few plastic storage containers filled myself, only with different items. A hot glue gun and glue sticks, dried flowers and a grapevine wreath let me be creative and make something beautiful for the front door.

Has your home been an organizer's nightmare since you brought the children home? Even one child can pack a housekeeping punch, even before they are ever brought into the house. Babies and kids come with so much stuff. You need things for sleeping, eating, changing, bathing, clothing, and let's not forget, playing. All of these things can add up to a huge amount to organize. With parenthood being the busiest time of most people's lives, it can be hard to keep up with the major things, much less all of those little things. However, it must be done. If you don't spend some time getting it together, then it will only get worse and swallow you up. Use these tips for getting your child's things in order and most importantly, keeping them that way!

1) All the organizational products in the world won't keep you organized. Setting things up in a practical way should always be on your mind while you're organizing. Here's an example; Some people really enjoy having a changing station or changing table in the nursery. However, an overwhelming percentage of people who buy them, never use them. How could something that you'll use several times a day that stores all of your related baby items never get used? Location, location, location! Most people do not have the nursery right off of their living room, where they'll spend most of their time. So, they end up using a changing pad instead. The lesson here is that being expensive or seeming like a great idea means nothing if it's not convenient to use.

2) Keeping the convenience factor in mind, figure out where you want to organize. Don't make the mistake of creating plenty of space for toys all over the kids' rooms if the kids' toys are always all over the den. Your best bet for keeping a space organized is to provide easy access areas for toys to go. You'll have much more success in getting help from your family if you place your buckets, bins, toy boxes and shelves very near where they will usually be playing with these things.

3) Do yourself a favor and make it easy for everyone in the house to help you. Even toddlers can put their own clothes away if you simply lay pajamas flat instead of folding, use children's hangers instead of adult hangers, and have a separate bucket for socks and burp cloths. Lower your perspective and think about what would be easy on your child's level. Infant hangers and baby hangers are much easier to handle, plus they don't stretch and damage little clothes. Clothes that don't wrinkle, don't necessarily have to be folded or hung. Making daily tasks easier will make organization a lower maintenance job.
